My die-hard Republican father-in-law "Feels the Bern!"

I am just getting back from my father-in-law’s birthday dinner tonight in a little Mexican restaurant here in town. My wife and I avoid talking politics around family because her side of the family are conservative Christians who base their vote on whether-or-not there is an “R” next to the name.

Well, 3 out of the 4 televisions in the restaurant were on soccer games, the fourth happened to be on CNN where they were discussing the violence that has been following the Trump rallies across the country. That got him started. He went on and on about how much of an idiot that man was and he couldn’t believe people were actually voting for him. My wife and I shared a surprised look.

Of course, my wife and I want to change the conversation because we want to have a pleasant evening to celebrate his birthday, but before we could he got started on Hillary (my wife and I are Bernie supporters but will vote for Hillary if she gets the nomination) and I say to myself, “Here we go.”

So I settle in waiting for him to get on to Bernie and start raving about “communist,”“liberals,” etc., etc. By this time I was expecting this to be another unpleasant family gathering.

I was in for a HUGE surprise. He says to us, “You know Bernie is in town tonight? I wanted to go to that, but we had my birthday dinner scheduled for the same time. I rather vote for Bernie than that raving lunatic. At least Bernie knows what he’s talking about.”

My wife and I were actually planning to skip my father-in-law’s birthday dinner when we found out Bernie was coming to town. So we look at each other again and said at the same time to my father-in-law, “You should have told us! We would have taken you!”

So now I know my arch-conservative father-in-law “feels the Bern.” He would rather vote for Bernie than anyone the Republican party is trying to nominate because they are “all lunatics.” I can’t stop smiling about that.

It wasn’t my birthday, but that was the biggest surprise of the night for me. Wish I could’ve gone to the “feel the Bern” rally. Thanks for reading.
